Knitting chart maker from a picture

Turn a picture into a colorwork knitting chart for intarsia, Fair Isle or duplicate stitch. The chart uses your stitch and row gauge, because knit stitches are wider than they are tall.

How to use the knitting chart maker from a picture

  1. Upload a picture.
  2. Enter your gauge (stitches and rows per 4 in / 10 cm).
  3. Choose the width in stitches and the number of yarn colors.
  4. Download the chart PNG or a printable PDF with row-by-row color changes.

Tips for better results

  • Swatch first: the chart is only as accurate as your gauge.
  • For stranded colorwork, keep 2–3 colors per row; use clean-up to shorten floats.
  • Duplicate stitch is an easy way to add a small chart to a finished sweater.

FAQ

Why does the chart look taller than my photo?

Each chart cell is drawn in your stitch proportions. Because stitches are wider than tall, the chart needs more rows than a square grid would. Knitted up, the picture comes out the right shape.

Which direction do I read the chart?

For flat knitting, row 1 is at the bottom, right-side rows are read right to left and wrong-side rows left to right. In the round, read every row right to left.

Can I use it for intarsia?

Yes. Intarsia suits large blocks of color. Use fewer colors and more clean-up for simpler shapes.
